Director Terry Gilliam Slams #MeToo Movement In New Interview, Calling It A 'Witch Hunt' And Worse

Terry Gilliam #MeToo movement comments

Filmmaker and director Terry Gilliam is at it again, criticizing the #MeToo Movement in a new round of interviews that’s causing a lot of controversy on social media.

The 79-year-old Time Bandits director and Monty Python cast member had come under fire previously for his comments made about the social movement back in 2018. But now, while promoting his new film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Gilliam is at it again, causing another uproar in the process…

The director made his latest comments while speaking about filmmaking to The Independent, opening up with one heck of a pitiful complaint about being a white man in society today (below):

“I’m tired, as a white male, of being blamed for everything that is wrong with the world. I want people to take responsibility and not just constantly point a finger at somebody else, saying, ‘You’ve ruined my life.’ #MeToo is a witch-hunt. I really feel there were a lot of people, decent people, or mildly irritating people, who were getting hammered. That’s wrong. I don’t like mob mentality.”

Uhhhh, suuuuure, Terry… white men have had it so hard… riiiight

He was far from finished at that point, though, and he got on a bit of a roll.

Next up was the Harvey Weinstein case, in which Gilliam called out Weinstein’s alleged sexual assault victims:

“When you have power, you don’t take responsibility for abusing others. You enjoy the power. That’s the way it works in reality. These were ambitious adults … There are many victims in Harvey’s life, and I feel sympathy for them, but then, Hollywood is full of very ambitious people who are adults and they make choices.”

Yikes!

And he added on from there, too, noting it was OK to hate him (thanks!) while finishing up with this comment on fundamentalism:

“You can hate what I just said. That’s fine! No problem. I mean, you can believe whatever you want to believe, but fundamentalism always ends up being, ‘You have to attack other people who are not like you,’ and that’s what makes me crazy.”

Hmmm… OK.

As we noted above, it echoes comments made by the director back in 2018 during a film festival in the Czech Republic.

In those comments, he called himself “Loretta” and said he was “a black lesbian in transition,” in order to get away from what he felt was the stigma of being a white male.

His full controversial quote at the time was as follows (below):

“I no longer want to be a white male, I don’t want to be blamed for everything wrong in the world. I tell the world now I’m a black lesbian. My name is Loretta and I’m a BLT, a black lesbian in transition.”

Yeah… not great! Not great at all!
