Time magazine recently put out its Which Word Should Be Banned? for the 2015 year and many were surprised to learn that the word “feminist” was one of the words that was on its list.
REALLY?
In the article, the writer Katy Stienmetz wrote:
“Feminist: You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.”
Well, many are outraged by the fact that this word was included in a poll that apparently banned the word “twerk” last year.

A whole bunch of stars on Twitter feel the same, too!
Here’s what Kelly Oxford wrote:
“TIME magazine put the word ‘Feminist’ on a list of words that should be banned, prompting people to ask, “What is TIME magazine?”
Here’s what Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead wrote:
“I vote we rename the magazine Turn Back Time #Feminist #Time”
Here’s what Roxane Gay wrote:
“Omg. Time Magazine. Have a seat! What were you thinking putting “feminist” on that list? And a woman wrote it. Drop squad needed.”
It does seem kind of odd to include the word feminist alongside words such as “basic,” “bae,” and “om nom nom nom.”
Hopefully the readers will agree with the ridiculousness of the inclusion of this word, and we won’t have feminist as the word Time wants to ban in 2015. But here’s the thing: as of writing this, “feminist” is in the LEAD at 50% of the votes!!
It’s pretty outrageous the word was even included as one of the words to ban. Especially after “twerk,” it seems like kind of a sharp drop off from less important to important, no?
