It sounds like the Church of Scientology has done more harm than good in Tom Cruise‘s life.
Not only has David Miscavige allegedly recorded and mocked the actor’s secrete confessions — without his consent — but the religion scared off Pen├â┬⌐lope Cruz too!
Following his divorce with Nicole Kidman, Cruise fell deeply in love with his Vanilla Sky co-star and dated her for three years.
He was hoping she’d become his third wife, but after the seksi actress began to feel like Scientology “was the third wheel in their relationship,” she delivered a crushing blow by dumping him. A source close to the situation explained:
“Tom had absolutely planned on proposing to Penelope, and they had openly discussed marriage during the three years they were dating. Tom was head over heels in love with Penelope and could see them spending the rest of their lives together, and she felt the same way. However, Penelope pulled the plug on the relationship because she felt that the Church of Scientology was the third wheel in their relationship.”
Even though the religion got in the way of their happiness, Pen├â┬⌐lope doesn’t have anything against it. In fact, she even “admired Tom’s dedication to it” at one point, as the source continued:
“Penelope doesn’t have anything against the Church, but it just wasn’t her thing. She admired Tom’s dedication to it, but it wasn’t her cup of tea and wasn’t something she wanted to give her life up for.”
The Mission: Impossible star’s rep says “it’s ridiculously false” that his religion got in the way of his romance with Cruz, but after reading Vanity Fair‘s controversial cover story, it’s hard NOT to believe that at least some of this stuff has to be true.
Eight years since their split, Cruz is happily married and shares a child with Javier Bardem, while the other Cruise is not happily married but shares an adorable child with Katie Holmes.
