We love us some Tom Ford, especially when he sits down for an interview.
The designer recently chat with with Grazia magazine and to no one’s surprise he talks about his favorite subject: himself and fashion. But mostly himself.
Here are some HIGHlights from Mr. Ford’s egocentric interview:
On getting his start in the biz:
“I arrived in an Armani jacket, Calvin Klein jeans and cowboy boots because I├óΓé¼Γäód been reading GQ in 1977 and that was the look. And I was prepared for New York! Calvin Klein jeans although they were very chic at the time were maybe a bit tight. That helped my career too, the fact they were a little tight├óΓé¼┬ª!”
On American vs. British fashion:
“London is a place where eccentricity and individuality in clothing in particular is admired, and is respected├óΓé¼┬ª. Americans are afraid of style. You know, remember America was founded by the puritans who fled the UK. They were very stern and strict, and too much style in America is considered a bad thing. That├óΓé¼Γäós changing, you know, now it├óΓé¼Γäós totally different really. Globally, we├óΓé¼Γäóre unfortunately seeing a breast implant style taking that├óΓé¼Γäós over the world.├óΓé¼┬¥
On if he feels like he’s a fashion legend:
“No, I don’t at all. My feet are really kept on the ground by Richard Buckley, who I’ve been with for 25 years. Occasionally when I have someone in for an interview, a young student or someone who I’m interviewing for a new position, and I see their hand shake I realize that oh maybe I have this effect on people. But I don’t think you can think of yourself in that way. I think people who are compelled to achieve never really think they’ve achieved…I think the moment you get to a place when you think ‘Oh I’m a fashion legend’ then that’s when you’re no longer competitive in your field.”
On those rumors about collaborating with H&M:
“No, I├óΓé¼Γäóve never had a conversation with them. I├óΓé¼Γäóm amused every time I read that. Not that I don├óΓé¼Γäót have respect for them but I never had a conversation with them.”
Oh, Tom! Who are you kidding!?
We all know you think you’re legen – wait for it – dary! It’s a little too late in the game to start being modest!
