This breaks our hearts.
It’s been reported that veteran television writer Tom Whedon died on Wednesday at the age of 83.
The Emmy-winning scribe and producer worked on shows like The Golden Girls, Captain Kangaroo, and The Electric Company.
Tom is also the father of talented writers — including Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, who also wrote the screenplay for Toy Story and helmed several hit shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The New York native’s father was screenwriter John Whedon, who wrote on The Donna Reed Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show — clearly, the Whedon family has a pretty talented gene pool.
On Friday, Tom’s other son Jed Whedon — whose credits include Agends of S.H.I.E.L.D and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog — shared the news of his father’s passing on Instagram, writing:

What an accomplished career.
It’s always hard losing a loved one, but we’re sure Tom’s legacy will live on through the talents of his family.
