If you missed Trevor Noah’s joke about white people during the Oscars on Sunday, chances are you’re probably white. Or, just don’t speak the Bantu language of the Xhosa.
The Daily Show host was introducing Black Panther as a Best Picture nominee when he used a so-called “great” Xhosa phrase while referencing the film’s fictional setting of Wakanda.

He said:
“Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village, and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase: Abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka, which means: ‘In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart.'”
So powerful, so wise, so… not actually what that phrase means!
After Noah’s appearance, many outlets pointed out that the phrase from the South African language actually translates to:
“White people don’t know that I’m lying.”
LOLz!! They do now!
