Uber’s Self-Driving Car Just Killed A Pedestrian!
Whether you want to call it real-life Christine or Black Rearview Mirror, this is truly terrifying.
For the first time since their inception, a self-driving car has taken a human life.
Uber‘s testing of the vehicles, which was taking place in high traffic cities like Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto, was suspended after Tempe, Arizona police say the car struck and killed a pedestrian on Sunday.
The woman was apparently crossing the road but not within the designated crosswalk when Uber’s test car — in autonomous mode but with a human tester behind the wheel — drove into her. She later died of her injuries at the hospital.
It remains to be seen whether this incident will fuel the public’s fear of self-driving technology.
In case you wondered, 5,376 pedestrians were killed and 129,000 treated for injuries after being hit by cars driven by humans in 2015, the most recent year for which data is complete, according to the CDC.
