Alzheimer’s has been baffling scientists ever since it was first diagnosed. But a new ultrasound device being developed may be the key to accessing the parts of the brain necessary to cure it.
Part of the reason scientists have had trouble working with Alzheimer’s in the past is that the brain puts up natural defense mechanisms against the drug they’ve been using, but biomedical engineer Elisa Konofagou from Columbia University believes that an ultrasound device could hold the key.
One way they treat the disease is to inject a medicine into your brain, but most of the time the brain rejects it.
‘The blood-brain barrier is like a brick wall reinforced by wires, and [ultrasound] is a way of temporarily relaxing those wires,’ Dr. Konofagou said.
