One Hotel In New York Is So Much Better Than You That It'll Charge You $500 For Thinking Otherwise

union street guest house 500 fee
This is some genius-level marketing.
The once unheard of Union Street Guest House in Hudson, New York, is going viral.
That’s because it’s so much classier than you, that if you say anything negative about your stay there on Yelp, it’ll practically rob you.
Seriously.
The vintage hotel in the historic New York town aims to get wedding parties to stay in its rooms. However, due to the old-timey feel, the hotel found that many visitors were unimpressed with the less-than-modern features.
The solution? If any guest at your wedding writes a negative review on the web, the hotel will take $500 from your initial deposit.
But don’t worry. The Union is good people. You can get that money back if you convince your friends/family to remove the bad press. Simple as that!
The Union Street Guest House justified its clever marketing tactics by saying:

Please know that despite the fact that wedding couples love Hudson and our Inn, your friends and families may not. This is due to the fact that your guests may not understand what we offer – therefore we expect you to explain that to them.
If your guests are looking for a Marriott type hotel they may not like it here.

That’s the best free advertising Marriott has ever gotten.
Seriously, though. How pompous do you have to be to think that this idea would be well-received?
Also, while the Hudson hotel is clearly trying to please its immediate clients by saying the bride/groom are usually smart, offending the people said bride/groom invited to their wedding doesn’t seem like the best call.
But we know what’s really going on. This is all just a really well-engineered ploy to get Gordon Ramsay to come to its aid on the next season of Hotel Hell.
Nice move, Union Street.
