Thanks to a couple of savvy students, a situation that could have possibly become a terrifying nightmare for one Wisconsin college was immediately halted Tuesday morning.
According to University public relations director Claire Beglinger, two students spotted what they described as a white male in his 50s near the tennis courts of Waukesha’s Carroll University with a “long gun.”
They immediately called public safety officers to report the situation.
Soon after that, the University was placed on lockdown while students received the following alert from campus officials on their cell phones at 10:39 AM:
“Not a test There is a report of a male with a firearm walking near the tennis courts and the Barstow Building on Barstow. remain indoors until further notice.”
At 11:25 AM, police officers with their guns drawn had closed off Maple Street near the campus.
Fortunately, the bearded man was soon captured and taken into custody, though no further details concerning his intention have been revealed.
Just after noon, the lockdown was lifted “per instructions from the Waukesha Police Department and the Carroll Campus Safety Department.”
This all happened on the sixth anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. Though it isn’t clear yet if this situation would have resulted in another tragedy, we’re sincerely impressed with the speed and performance of the police response.
