In the sports world, the WNBA is WAY ahead of everyone else in terms of their support for the LGBT community, but apparently not everyone is on board.
The city of San Antonio is currently in a heated debate over the possibility of offering nondiscrimination protection for individuals based on their sexual orientation, and one local basketballer decided to voice her disapproval for the move.
Sophia Young took to Twitter to share her opinion on the matter and wrote:
“Should San Antonio be a city that allows same sex marriage?? I vote NO.”
Wow! How disappointing!
There was immediate backlash against the controversial tweet, and one of her fellow WNBA players, Lauren Jackson responded by writing:
“Everyone deserves the right to love, to be accepted and to be treated equally. WORKING TOWARD A BETTER WORLD FOR ALL.”
Amen sister!!
Despite all of the criticism, Sophia has stood by her comments and later posted a picture (above) of herself holding a sign that reads “Vote NO.”
As we previously mentioned, the city of San Antonio is not actually looking into making gay marriage legal, but is considering whether or not to put nondiscrimination laws in place. Still, that hasn’t prevented the San Antonio Silver Stars forward from speaking her mind.
With all of the progress that has been made in the sports world recently, it’s disappointing to see players who are still opposed to change, especially in a league that has received so much support from the LGBT community.
