A boob’s a boob when it comes to a dog, we guess! Especially when it’s unlikely to survive otherwise!
A Labrador puppy refused to drink any milk of formula from a bottle — and as the runt of the litter, it wasn’t going to survive very long if it didn’t eat something after the whole group of pups’ mother died.
So, a Colorado woman took the matters into her own hands, and also one of her boobs! She breastfed the dog herself, saving its tiny little life!
Having a 15-month-old baby at home, it did seem a little weird to her, but that didn’t stop her:
“I thought ‘just put him on you and pray to God that he’ll take something and not die”. I didn’t know what else to do. I was desperate and I just couldn’t bear sitting there watching him die. I’ve seen the results. That dog is alive because I took the initiative.”
It’s great that the dog survived, but it’s not all happy-go-lucky: it’s actually dangerous to do that. One vet had this to say about the process:
“There are things that can be passed from puppies to babies. In an emergency situation, I don’t think it’s a big deal, but for them to grow appropriately, I think it would be important for them to get on a canine formula.”
Apparently human breast milk is not the most nutritional food for puppies, and wouldn’t be good to keep a dog on it as they grow!
Honestly, we think that’s a risk we’re glad she took to help the little pup out! It’s not like she’ll breastfeed him forever — just to keep it alive long enough to eat the right things!
