Woman Dies After Getting A Smoker's Lungs In Transplant

woman dies smoker lungs transplant
Awful.
Why do people have to smoke? What’s the point? It hurts you AND it hurts others.
For instance, this woman had cystic fibrosis and died after getting a lung transplant from a smoker. That didn’t need to happen. Jennifer Wederell had been on the waiting list for it for 18 months when in April 2011, she was told there was finally a match.
She did not know and was not told the donor was a smoker.
In February 2012 a malignant mass was found in her lungs. She died less than 16 months after the transplant. Here’s what her father said:

“The shock immediately turned to anger insofar as all the risks were explained in the hour before her transplant and not once was the fact smoker’s lungs would be used mentioned.”

That’s unacceptable.
Also, get this — the doctors are trying to say the risk was worth it, rather than pass up the opportunity. We might agree with that HAD she been given the choice. That is not theirs to make, and it makes us sick that she wasn’t told the whole story. We bet the severity of the smoking would at least come into play!
The REAL moral of the story is that you should never smoke. You never know who you’re hurting outside of yourself!
