We know. That’s kind of a mouthful.
But seriously, this is the weirdest outcome to a tennis match you could probably think of.
The facts are these:
1. World Team Tennis is similar to “regular” tennis, but with additional rules and the team aspect where your group must win three out of the five matches, including: Women’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Men’s Singles, and Mixed Doubles.
2. Last night’s Eastern Conference Championship game of Women’s Doubles pitched the reigning champs, the Washington Kastles, against Philadelphia Freedoms.
3. The Freedoms’ had Taylor Townsend and Liezel Huber against Martina Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova on the Kastles.
Okay, now that we’ve got the basics covered, here’s where it gets really interesting.
During play, Taylor accidentally smacked Liezel in the head with her tennis racket. And while Liezel tried to soldier on, she eventually had to quit due to her injury that ended up being a concussion.
Well, in a normal tennis match, Taylor would have also had to forfeit. But, since her team was relying on a win from her, she still had to play, but now two against one.
And, what made it worse, is that Taylor still wasn’t allowed to cross the line into Liezel’s section, so anytime the ball landed on that half, Taylor could only stand still and watch it score against her.
