Zac Efron‘s DJ movie We Are Your Friends failed to pump up the box office its opening weekend, earning it the third worst wide-release opening in movie HISTORY!
The Max Joseph directed film follows Efron as an aspiring EDM DJ trying to break into the scene and become a music producer — and opened to a dismal $1.8 million!
Some believe the financial failure could be due to lack of promotion, but EDM titan Deadmau5 thinks it’s due to a lack of interest!

The performer didn’t hide his excitement about the music drama’s horrible box office performance, sharing on his Twitter:
Well if anything restored my faith in music, apparently that zac efron trying to be a DJ movie bombed out this wknd. https://t.co/UYEhRGx6rR

Let’s make an EDM movie, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.

While Deadmau5 may have vociferously opposed the niche film, WAYF did have support from a few EDM power players; Alesso, Dirty South, Nicky Romero and Dillon Francis all made cameos in the film!
Regardless of what the DJ community thinks of the film, we have a feeling studios won’t be releasing any more EDM movies anytime soon — which seems to be exactly the way Deadmau5 likes it!
