Zac Efron Breaks His Silence After Scary Hospitalization Reports!

Zac Efron addresses his hospitalization in Australia.

We’re so glad to hear a positive health update from Zac Efron!

Over the weekend, we shared a report with you that the 32-year-old actor had fallen seriously ill in Papua New Guinea while filming for his upcoming digital reality series, Killing Zac Efron. After supposedly receiving life-saving treatment for what was said to be “a form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection,” the TV and film star is speaking out about the scary incident and his recovery.

On Sunday evening, Efron took to Instagram and shared a message of gratitude with his 41 million followers. Alongside a photo captured in the southwestern Pacific country, he wrote:

“Very thankful to everyone who has reached out. I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks in P.N.G. I’m home for the holidays with my friends and family. Thanks for all the love and concern, see you in 2020!”

Phew. It’s wonderful to hear you’re on the mend, dude!

An initial report from Australia’s Sunday Telegraph explained how a medevac crew airlifted Zac to Brisbane to receive immediate treatment for the potentially fatal infection, noting he was in stable condition by the time first responders brought him to St. Andrews War Memorial Hospital.

After several days of medical attention and observation, the Baywatch star was given clearance to return to the United States before Christmas. Considering how optimistic the post (above) sounds, he seems to be in good spirits — all things considered!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, typhoid is a life-threatening illness caused by bacteria that can be found in contaminated water and food. People who contract it can be treated with antibiotics and vaccines, if available.

This is the first we’ve heard from Vanessa Hudgens‘ ex since everything went down, so we do hope he’s getting some good rest since he’s returned home for the holidays. A very timely social tag caught him looking good while doing some casual shopping with friends in Los Angeles a little over a week ago, which is a great sign!

The High School Musical alum’s new gig on Quibi, a short-form mobile video platform, is supposed to follow him as he goes “deep into the jungle of a remote, dangerous island, falling off the grid for 21 days.” During his daring travels, Zac must forego all luxuries to survive with nothing but basic gear and a savvy local partner to lead the way.

Ahead of filming, Efron told The Hollywood Reporter how stoked he was to embark on this new adventure:

“I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level. I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits!”

Here’s to more exciting but safe new experiences in 2020!
