Yesterday we reported about the hijacking of an Aeromexico flight from Cancun to Mexico City.
Fortunately, the passengers were allowed to exit the aircraft safely shortly after touching down in Mexico City and the suspects, believed to be Bolivians or Colombians, were taken into custody by the federal authorities.
A passenger on the plane said the hijackers didn’t speak to them once during the 45 minutes they were held.
Turns out the hijackers were carrying a cardboard box which they said contained a bomb and threatened to blow everything up if they weren’t allowed to speak to President Felipe Calderon. Crazies.
We’re just relieved that no one was hurt!
Update: New reports have just been released stating that a 44-year-old Bolivian man, Josmar Flores Pereira, was solely responsible for the hijacking. He’s being described as a drug addict and alcoholic who also happens to be religious.
As for the reason behind the hijacking, apparently the date September 9, 2009 (09/09/09) represented the reversed 666 to him.
A public safety official added that “He said that because of that divine reference, he wanted to alert Mexico City of an earthquake.”
