Salt Lake City's Air Quality In January Is The Worst Throughout The Nation!

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueHealth

How is this even possible?!?

When we think of Salt Lake City, Utah, we automatically picture snow capped mountains and greenery, but according to reports, the city has the WORST air quality in the nation throughout January.

During the first month of the year, the Salt Lake region gets smothered by an icy fog, which gets trapped in the mountain valleys, and as a result, causes a whole mess of grime to just linger.

YUCK!

It was announced that the city currently has 130 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, but luckily for Salt Lake residents, it'll eventually go away!!

Want more deets on this nastiness?!? Peep the video (above)!

Volvo Launches Pedestrian Airbags!

PEdestrian Air Bag Launch

People INSIDE the cars aren't the only worry anymore for Volvo!

The clever car makers are launching their new airbag system that actually protects pedestrians if they're struck by the vehicle!

The new system is available in the 2013 V40 model, and if you look at the pic (above), you'll see that it's under the hood. It will inflate in a few hundredths of a second to cover around a third of the windshield.

It's only launched at speeds between 12 to 31 mph.

Unfortunately there are unavoidable situations where this would need to deploy, but we'd much rather people drive cautiously than to ever need to rely on this!

The system's seven sensors are located at the front of the vehicle. They can actually detect legs — and if they detect them, everything launches automatically!

Science!

Air Pollution From Traffic Boosts Risk Of Heart Attack

Traffic jam

Next time you're in a traffic jam, it might not be a bad idea to huff and puff with your windows UP!

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, breathing in the fumes from heavy traffic can boost your risk of heart attack for up to six hours.

Air pollution won't start causing heart attacks for just anyone, but could increase the chance of heart attacks in people already at risk.

To discover this revelation, researchers looked at health data from 79,288 people who have had a heart attack between 2003 and 2006 in the United Kingdom.

They then looked at traffic pollution data, including carbon monoxide and ozone levels, in different parts of the country.

After studying and comparing the data, it was determined that the likelihood of having a heart attack was the highest 6 hours after the people studied had been exposed to traffic fumes.

The connection is not entirely clear, but pollution can possibly thicken blood to make it more likely to clot. A co-funder of the study told news sources:

"We know that pollution can have a major effect on your heart health, possibly because it can 'thicken' the blood to make it more likely to clot, putting you at higher risk of a heart attack."

A similar study on the link between heart attacks and traffic suggests that although pollution may have an effect on the heart, it may also be stress!

The researcher presenting her findings during American Heart Association's 49th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease, said:

"One potential factor could be the exhaust and air pollution coming from other cars, but we can't exclude the synergy between stress and air pollution that could tip the scale."

It's pretty hard to avoid traffic if you live anywhere near civilization, so the best way to avoid being at risk at ALL is to lead a healthy lifestyle with lots of exercise and good food!

NBC Waves Goodbye To Wimbledon, While ESPN Says Hello!

Wimbledon espn

ESPN has snatched up the rights to exclusively air the Grand Slam tournament Wimbledon for the next 12 years, ending NBC's 43 years as the tennis tourney's broadcast home.

If any die hard NBC fans are upset by this movie, ESPN at least promised:

"Comprehensive coverage from start to finish across a variety of platforms will result in more tennis for fans and all of it live."

NBC expressed interest in continuing to air Wimbledon, but was simply outbid. Maybe NBC spent too much money when the network outbid both ESPN and Fox for the rights to air the Olympics through 2020!

Compressed Air Turns Trucker Into ‘Human Balloon’

Compressed Air Turns Trucker Into ‘Human Balloon’

Ouch.

A New Zealand truck driver, Steven McCormack, found himself in painful predicament after he fell onto the fitting of a compressed air hose, which pierced his right buttock and started forcing air into his body.

At 100 pounds a square inch.

WTF.

Said Steven:

"I felt the air rush into my body and I felt like it was going to explode from my foot. I was blowing up like a football. I had no choice but just to lay there, blowing up like a balloon."

Thankfully, his coworkers heard him yelling and came over to help. He was then rushed to the hospital and treated for terrible swelling and fluid in one lung.

He’s lucky to be alive!

North Korea Airs Bend It Like Beckham On TV! First Western-Made Film To Do So!

north-korea-allows-western-made-bend-it-like-beckham-to-air-on-tv

So crazy!

North Koreans were allowed to watch a western-made film for the first time on TV this past week when the British Embassy made arrangements for the British soccer film Bend It Like Beckham, co-starring Keira Knightley, to be broadcast!

Normally, western films are considered a big no-no in the country, but given the public's love for the sport, an exception was made. However, much of the film's content - including interracial relationships, homosexuality, and religion - was cut out of their edit, leaving the film's new running length to be about an hour.

We find it so unfortunate that so many places enforce censorship to that degree, but we suppose this is a step in the direction of progress!

Hopefully it will continue to come!
