Mutts

Hope this is better than Garfield!

20th Century Fox is prepping a big-screen version of the popular comic strip Mutts.

The studio’s animation division has hired Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell and his brother Robert McDonnell to write the script for a feature-length animated film.

Mutts is a daily comic strip centering on the antics of a dog named Earl and a cat named Mooch who interact with each other and the animals in their neighborhood, as well as their human owners.

McDonnell created the humor strip, syndicated by King Features Syndicate, in 1994.

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz said before his death that he was a big fan of the strip.

Blind Horse Has Seeing-Eye Goats And Sheep

horse has seeing eye goats

Why isn't this a animated cartoon series?

"Sissy came with five goats and five sheep — and they take care of her," claims the horse's new caretaker, Michelle Feldstein.

The force behind Deer Haven Ranch (retirement home for neglected creatures) was not prepared for the 40-legged, seeing-eye entourage that accompanied "Sissy," a sightless, 15-year-old quarter horse.

The five seeing-eye sheep and five guard goats are never far from the white mare, and they never lead her astray. They shepherd Sissy to food and water, and angle the horse into her stall amid blowing snows or driving rains.

"They round her up at feeding time and then move aside to make sure she gets to the hay. They show her where the water is and stand between her and the fence to let her know the fence is there. There's a magic involved in sheep, goats and a horse becoming best friends."

Feldstein said, adding: "When you watch them, you have to wonder, why can't people do that?"

Madagascar Penguins Get Their Own Spinoff Movie

Madagascar Penguins

Rejoice Penguin lovers!

Move over Happy Feet penguins — Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico are the new waddling stars of the big screen.

The Madagascar Penguins are set to star in their very own DreamWorks feature film.

The four paramilitary avians from Antarctica are secondary but scene-stealing characters in the Madagascar movies (the third of which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2012).

In a sign of the foursome's fanning fashionability, when the first movie hit Blu-ray, The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper, an animated short featuring the penguins, was one of the extras.

The characters were also spun off in a CGI-animated TV show titled The Penguins of Madagascar that aired on Nickelodeon; it finished 2010 as the second most-watched animated show behind SpongeBob SquarePants amongst ages 2-11.

We can't wait to see it — but we're gonna have to (they just started writing it).

How Johnny Depp "Became" A Lizard

In Rango, Johnny Depp stars as an animated lizard.

He remembers getting deep into character with his director Gore Verbinski.

“Early on, some of the talks that Gore and I had had about the character I mean. Talk about two grown men, middle aged men discussing the possibility of one of them being a lizard. So it starts off on a surreal kind of note, anyway.”

Most animated movies have the actors record their lines one at a time in a sound booth. Instead, Verbinski got the whole cast together to act out the entire movie, while sound technicians recorded them.

“Ultimately, it was everything. However, the process that we did, that Gore created this sort of atmosphere that was really, truly ludicrous. I mean, just ridiculous. It was like just regional theater at its worst.”

Check out the video above to hear more about the inspiration of the animal flick.
