Police think they have a much clearer picture today of the Tuesday's mass shooting in Northern California.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston revealed to the press on Wednesday the first victim seems to have been his own wife.

Police found her body "concealed under the floorboards" of their home. They believe she was killed on Monday; he apparently spent the night trying to cover it up before giving up and beginning a killing spree instead. Johnson elaborates:

"There was a hole cut in the floor… we're confident that he murdered her, shot her at some point on Monday, and just put her body in the hole in the floor and just covered it up… We believe that's probably what started this whole event."

Neal was already scheduled for trial in December for crimes committed earlier in the year; according to reports he shot

UPDATE 3:05 P.M. EST: CBS News has updated their death toll to five.

Latest reports say police are now investigating at least seven different crime scenes. So far they have recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns.

At least three people are dead after a shooting on Tuesday near and at Rancho Tehama School in Northern California.

That number unfortunately may not be final as Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told the press "a number" of children had been airlifted for medical attention. An official at Enloe Medical Center has reported receiving one adult and three children.

Among the dead is the shooter, who was killed by police.

Authorities say the man first opened fire at a private residence then moved to the elementary school, apparently doing more shooting along the way.

Authorities also say they have 100 law enforcement personnel in the area investigating at least five different crime scenes.

Local news channel CBS13 reports the school has been evacuated, but some parents are stuck on the other side of road block from their children.

At the very least, no children were physically harmed.

As we reported, on Tuesday, a man identified as Luvelle Kennon (pictured above) allegedly held 70-year-old first grade teacher Linda Montgomery hostage in a classroom at Castle View Elementary School in Riverside, CA.

According to People, the almost seven-hour ordeal ended when authorities entered the room using flash-bang grenades, and shot the suspect, whose daughter reportedly attends the school. Kennon was transported to the hospital, and later died, said a Riverside Police press release.

While the teacher is safe, authorities say she is "OK, but traumatized," KTLA 5 reports.

It is unclear specifically why the 27-year-old was shot, why he allegedly held the educator against her will, if the two had previous contact, and whether he was armed.

The school will remain closed for the rest of this week.
