Everyone knows we need to take our vitamins just as our mother told us ever since we were young, yet in today’s world most of us don’t get anywhere close to the amount of vitamins and minerals we should be consuming daily and our blithe attitude for their significance reflects that behavior.

However, the prevalence of refined and processed foods has stripped away many vitamins and minerals, which is partly to blame. Nonetheless, we need to be accountable for our health. Vitamin deficiencies are all too common and unfortunately this causes suboptimal health and dysfunction within the body in a host of different ways. Over time, these deficiencies put you at risk for chronic diseases and cancer.

Now with that being said, if you want a resilient and healthy body, everyone should be taking a daily multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. Period. Obtaining adequate amounts of vitamins from natural, whole foods is always the best method, but because rarely any of us do supplementation is required. Even if you believe your diet is spot on where you are consuming 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, it really doesn’t hurt to take a supplement for insurance purposes.

So, to help you become more conscious of vitamins, here is a simple and brief guide to the vitamin alphabet where I will be highlighting why each vitamin is important and what the best food sources are to find them in.

Vitamin D's Cancer Effect Unclear

Vitamin D Cancer Bones

Unfortunately, Vitamin D's effect on cancer is still unclear. The good news is, though, that it DOES seem to prevent fractures!

We're talking taking vitamin d and calcium as supplement and if it'll help lower the risk of cancer. In the study, the cancer link was pretty inconclusive, but they did find an 11% drop in risk of fracture in bones. In the elderly tested, that percentage jumped to 30%!

More controlled tests are needed for the specifics on cancer though, so we'll keep you updated with what they come up with!

In the meantime, it still sounds like a good idea to be getting that vitamin D!
