18-Year-Old American Tourist Threw Newborn Baby From Window Of Paris Hotel, Say Prosecutors

18-Year-Old American Tourist In Police Custody After Allegedly Throwing Newborn From Paris Hotel Window

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

This is so awful…

An 18-year-old American tourist has been taken into police custody in Paris after allegedly throwing her newborn baby from a hotel window. According to local outlet Le Parisien, around 6 a.m. Monday a passerby saw a horrific scene. They called police and claimed to have seen an infant “with the umbilical cord” still attached thrown from a second-story Ibis Styles hotel window. In a statement obtained by People, the Paris prosecutor’s office said:

“The duty magistrate went to the scene. The newborn was treated urgently but did not survive.”

So the baby didn’t even die instantly… gut-wrenching.

The office said the investigation is being treated as a “homicide” of a minor, but the case is a lot more complicated than it appears. According to prosecutors, the teen mother could possibly have “denial of pregnancy,” a mental condition that is exactly what it sounds like. The statement from investigators continued:

“The mother, an American national, is part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe. She was taken to hospital where she is to undergo an operation following her delivery. She is also taken into custody on site. The possibility of denial of pregnancy is considered.”

The National Institutes of Health describes denial of pregnancy as a “psychological phenomenon” in which a woman is “unwilling to acknowledge or accept” that they’re expecting. It’s rare but has been known to develop due to trauma, fear, mental health disorders, or even substance abuse.

A person close to the investigation told Paris Match that there’s yet to be a clear understanding of why this happened:

“The investigation is underway and the precise circumstances of this tragedy remain to be established. We do not yet know if we are dealing with a denial of pregnancy.”

Heartbreaking. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information is released. May the little one rest in peace.
