Florence Pugh is opening up about some tricky situations she’s been put in while filming sex scenes.
The Oscar-nominated actress appeared on Tuesday’s episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, where she got candid about the highs and lows of working with intimacy coordinators — still a controversial topic in the film industry.

She explained to the host she appreciates them — because they’re there to make sure “people are safe” above all:
“It’s not to get in the way, it’s not to confuse, it’s not to make things more complicated or make things more awkward, it’s simply to make sure that everyone is happy with what they’re creating.”
But it’s a new thing, and like with all jobs there are those who maybe don’t know what they’re doing. She said she’s had “good ones and bad ones”:
“I’m having fantastic experiences with intimacy coordinators. However, that being said, I’ve also had a s**t example.”
The 29-year-old didn’t name names or get into specifics but told the host:
“Someone just made it so weird, and so awkward, and really wasn’t helpful, and kind of was just wanting to be a part of the set in a way that wasn’t helpful.”
Yeesh… But it sounds like it’s mostly getting better — and she’s already found it super helpful:
“I think it’s a job that’s still figuring itself out, but I will say I’ve been able to understand better meaning now through working with great ones in sex scenes. Finding the story of what it is, what kind of sex is it, how do you touch each other, how long have you been having sex for — all of these things really matter when you’re trying to build, for example, a relationship that’s been going for 10 years.”
The Little Women star added:
“I’d never thought of it like that before because sex scenes are so awkward for everyone on set.”
And they can get worse than awkward! Even in her short years before the advent of intimacy coordinators, Florence had some bad experiences! She recalled:
“I did a lot of my sex scenes before that was even a job. I think I’m quite confident, I’m quite happy in my skin, and I’ve always been able to make sure that I’m heard. That being said … there were plenty of things that I remember where it was just completely inappropriate to ask me to do that, to have directed me in that way.”
Oof! Oh no! Florence did take on quite a few sex scenes early on in her career, including for her breakout acclaimed performance in 2016’s Lady MacBeth — when she was just 20 years old!
