Cara Delevingne is opening up about her struggles with addiction.
Back in 2022, the supermodel sparked concern after pictures obtained by TMZ showed her looking disheveled and out of it as she walked outside barefoot at the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles after attending Burning Man (and following a three-week-long trip to Ibiza for her 30th birthday). Cara later admitted she was struggling with mental health and addiction issues at the time, and those photos served as “a reality check.” She has been sober since.

Now Cara is talking about the viral images that gave her a major wake-up call in an interview on Call Her Daddy this week. The Suicide Squad actress recalled she “was done with love” and in a “pretty hardcore time” of her life by that point. Although Cara had stopped doing ketamine and wasn’t really into alcohol, she hadn’t become sober yet. Instead, she turned to other drugs that helped her to dissociate and “knock” herself out. She specifically “was doing a lot of” GBL or GBH, which is a date rape drug. And when she needed to stay “awake,” she would take cocaine. That was her drug “mixture” of choice — a dangerous one.
During this period, Cara reconnected with her former schoolmate and current girlfriend, Minke. The Paper Towns star expressed that for the first time, she felt “safe,” which only made her “way more terrified” than ever before “of love.” It was also the moment of meeting her forever person that she realized “how bad” her addiction had gotten, so she promised Minke to go get sober — but only after she had one last “blowout” bash for her 30th birthday.
Cara thought quitting was “going to be really easy,” but she didn’t “know how addictive that stuff was.” The musician struggled through it, and she started suffering from seizures, which is what she had right before those viral photos:
“I didn’t know that you really had to like medically detox from it, and I started having seizures, and that’s literally those photos were taken right after I’d had a seizure at Burning Man. It was just an absolute storm. And also, it was just — it was so rough.”
OMG! How scary!
And what didn’t help was having her massive birthday party right beforehand! She continued:
“I’d had all my friends there, but they were kind of all there to watch me hurt myself. I was so skinny and covered in bruises, and I just locked myself in this little tower and would barely come out.”
We’re so glad Cara is in a better place now! How terrifying things had been for her back then! Watch Cara discuss her struggles with addiction (below):
