Whoa. Tommy Lee is opening up about one of the most disturbing moments from his years-long battle with addiction, and it’s honestly hard to wrap your head around.
During his brand-new appearance on Dax Shepard‘s popular Armchair Expert podcast, the Mötley Crüe drummer looked back at the band’s heyday and revealed just how far things spiraled way back when he and bassist Nikki Sixx ran out of heroin one night in the middle of the night.

On the pod, Lee recalled:
“There was a point where, I was with my bass player, and we were just doing a s**t load of heroin and we ran out. It was probably 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and we were like, ‘F**k what are we going to do?’”
Instead of stopping there, the rocker said they filled syringes with Jack Daniel’s whiskey and injected it, hoping to recreate the high.
…WHAT?!
Looking back, he realized just how dangerous that decision was. As he put it:
“We were shooting Jack Daniels. At that moment, I went ‘OK, we could just drink this, but we’re shooting it. This is f**king wrong and somebody’s going to die.’”
Yikes.
Lee also reflected on just how out of control life had become for the band, saying they would take handfuls of sleeping pills before going out to party. Eventually, they realized they needed help before it was too late.
He said:
“In 1989, we all decided we needed to go to rehab or someone was gonna die. We were zombies and people weren’t waking up. We were like someone’s going to die soon.”
Sadly, rehab wasn’t the end of the story.

Lee admitted he and Vince Neil celebrated the end of the Mr. Feelgood tour by heading to a strip club and drinking again, and he has continued to struggle with sobriety over the years.
He told Shepard:
“I think three years is the longest I’ve done [sober]. I get so excited that I’m like, ‘Oh my god, dude, I’ve been sober for a year,’ and I celebrate. That’s the f**ing problem.”
No kidding…
Of course, Lee has been extremely candid about his addiction before, including discussing a drinking binge in 2022 and a return to rehab in 2019. This latest interview, however, may be his most revealing yet.
What a wild, wild story. We’re glad he’s still here to tell it…
