During a recent interview, songwriter Heather Bright called out certain artists for their “shady songwriting practices.”
Here’s Heather on whether or not artists take publishing credit and money, even if they didn’t write their own songs:
“It depends on who you are. Rihanna takes publishing, Justin Bieber takes publishing, Kanye West takes publishing. On all the stuff that they don├óΓé¼Γäót write, they take publishing.”
Heather on Justin Bieber’s Somebody to Love writing credit (a song she wrote):
“Umm├óΓé¼┬ª How did he get a writing credit on it? That├óΓé¼Γäós an interesting question. I don├óΓé¼Γäót know. (laughs)”
And here Heather with some praise for artists who do, in fact, write their own songs:
“You can├óΓé¼Γäót be Rihanna and be producing and writing records. You just can├óΓé¼Γäót be doing that. You just won├óΓé¼Γäót have time. All the appearances, the performances, and the ├óΓé¼╦£this,├óΓé¼Γäó and the ├óΓé¼╦£that,├óΓé¼Γäó you gotta show up to record, you gotta promote the album, go on tour. I mean, people like Lady Gaga ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ It├óΓé¼Γäós amazing that they can find time to write! They have to write on tour, all of those artists who actually write!”
What do U think of Heather Bright’s comments? Is something rotten in the state of Denmark songwriting?
