President Barack Obama announced yesterday that he feels the U.S. has “largely achieved its goals in Afghanistan,” and he’ll be expediting the process of pulling out troops from the country.
According to Obama, the “tide of war is receding,” Afghanistan is no longer a terrorist threat to the U.S., and he believes that we must “focus on nation-building here at home.”
Based on his plan, 10,000 troops would be withdrawn from the country by the year’s end, and 20,000 more troops would be out by next summer. The rest of the 100,000 troops currently in Afghanistan would be brought home “at a steady pace” until Afghan authorities are handed security over the country in 2014.
Obama’s plan has already spurred support from French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who says he’ll also begin withdrawing French troops from Afghanistan.
What do U think about Obama’s announcement? Is he making the right move here?
