Since one of his best friends and bandmates, John Lennon, met his untimely end thanks to gun violence, it’s no surprise that Ringo Starr is such a passionate advocate of anti-gun violence.
In honor of the Non-Violence Project Foundation, the former Beatles drummer unveiled a knotted gun statue he designed on the 31st anniversary of Lennon’s death.
He asked for “peace and love” while advocating stricter weapons laws in London, saying:
“If you are caught with a gun it should be a higher sentence. Guns are just becoming more and more. They’re like the death of choice. So we hope that young people will stop. I can’t stand up and dictate to the world: ‘it’s over — no more guns.’ I can just do what I do, and there’s another side to the story which is peace and love.”
Speaking about the tragic day Lennon lost his life, Ringo said:
├óΓé¼┼ôThey called and said, ├óΓé¼╦£John├óΓé¼Γäós been killed. He├óΓé¼Γäós been shot and he├óΓé¼Γäós dead’…It was a bad day. But it was a bad day because someone took one of these and shot John.├óΓé¼┬¥
Ugh! Such a shame that incidents like that ever happened and continue to happen, so we totally support Ringo’s efforts!
