Ridley Scott‘s highly anticipated prequel of sorts to Alien is hitting theaters on June 8th, but Prometheus still doesn’t have a rating yet.
It’s currently being decided on by the ratings board, but Fox studio chief Tom Rothman revealed at CinemaCon this week that regardless of what rating the film gets, they ARE NOT cutting a single frame.
It sounds like there is a good chance it will be rated R, but he’s not worried about losing out on box office dollars and told the press:
“The rating board has not opened yet and it will go in to the board soon. This I can tell you and I can tell all the fans, not one frame will be cut. The movie will be what it should be. We will not cut a frame of the film. We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it’s an R, then so be it, because not an ounce, not a percentage are we going to compromise the film.”
We like that attitude, which makes us really believe this film will live up to all of the hype surrounding it. Rothman continued to explain that although it once was just a prequel to Alien, it “evolved” into something much larger:
“I think the easy thing would have been to make an Alien prequel and that’s where it started as an idea, but it evolved. Ridley’s ideas are much bigger than that and it really is a brand-new film, and this is the man who made Blade Runner. He hasn’t made a science-fiction film in 30 years, and to be honest, I didn’t want to undersell it. Prometheus is an ambitious title I hope everybody knows ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ it’s the name of the ship in the movie but also [based on] the god who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man and paid a serious price for it, so be careful what you do.”
Last, but not least, the film won’t exclude people who haven’t seen or aren’t fans of the science fiction franchise it’s based on. “If you’re a fan of Alien, great,” he said. “But if you’re not, it’s entirely self-contained and full of new ideas.
For the sake of younger fans who want to see an intelligent sci-fi movie that isn’t centered around a romance, we kind of hope it’s rated PG-13. Then again, we were kind of hoping there would be some blood and guts mixed in with the epic tale of where mankind came from.
