Unless you’re trying to be a vampire and spent the last week sleeping in a coffin, then you’re well aware of North Carolina’s news-breaking gay-marriage ban.
Appalled by such an unequal sign of our nation’s social climate, nine same-sex couples of Winston-Salem went straight to the Registry of Deeds to protest.
The couples, many of whom brought their children, all applied for a marriage license. And they were all rejected, one by one.
One man even went as far as to request the clerk’s printed rejection and date on his application for record. The clerk complied, and Brent Morin then said:
I just want to point out that we’re married in the District of Columbia, our nation’s capital. Thank you.
So upset by the state of affairs, one woman refused to leave until her application could be recognized. Mary Jamis, 52, and straight friend Mary Lea Bradford (who joined in support) were arrested for refusing to leave 30 minutes after closing.
Wow… It’s a shame, isn’t it???
It’s a shame that we still live in an era where otherwise outstanding citizens have to face arrest to get their non-violent message across.
