Saudi Arabia will finally enforce the ban on men working in lingerie stores and other female apparel and cosmetic stores this week.
The law was originally passed in 2006 but has never been put into effect because religious leaders say it goes against Islamic law.
Saudi Arabia’s top cleric Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al Sheikh even said in a recent sermon store owners should fear God for compromising on taboo matters:
“The employment of women in stores that sell female apparel and a woman standing face to face with a man selling to him without modesty or shame can lead to wrongdoing, of which the burden of this will fall on the owners of the stores.”
Because of the new law thousands of men will lose their sales jobs, but filling the positions won’t be a problem. According to the Labor Ministry 28,000 women have already applied to work in the stores.
