The U.S. Navy finally got a trademark on camouflage! The design is the pixelated black, gray and navy blue camo pattern, but the green is still okay!
Originally, the trademark was revoked because it was seen as functional and ornamental, but the Navy proved that they actually use the print to help distinguish themselves.
Since the trademark is so specific, designers shouldn’t even try and do it with their patterns. As the trademark application explained:
“[It is] to be sold to authorized patrons of the military exchanges pursuant to Armed Services Exchange Regulations.├óΓé¼┬¥
Designers can still copyright a pattern, which is different from a trademark.
So complicated!
Well, the good news is that we’ll still see camo prints on the streets. That is a good thing, right?!
