Doctors at Stanford and the University of Chicago found that involving family in adolescent anorexic therapy leads to a faster and more complete recovery. This contradicts some past beliefs that parents’ are the cause of eating disorders.
├óΓé¼┼ôThere is no evidence that parents cause anorexia nervosa,” said James Lock, one of the study’s authors. “They have been blamed with circumstantial data.”
Researchers found that recovery rates were almost twice as high for the patients in the family-based treatment programs, and that they also gained weight faster and displayed healthier attitudes towards food.
Eating disorders are terrible and destructive things caused by numerous psychological and sociological factors. They are scary, but at least we now know a better way to treat people suffering from them!
