Well, we can’t say we’re surprised.
According to a federal government report, the number of American adults treated for diabetes increased from 9 to 19 million between 1996 and 2007.
Over 95% of the cases reported were type 2 diabetes, which is often related to obesity.
Said Dr. Christine Resta of the division of endocrinology at Maimonides Medical Center, New York City:
“Rates of diabetes have risen in all age groups. Twenty years ago, type 2 diabetes was unheard of in children and young adults, but now it is being diagnosed even in these younger age groups.├óΓé¼┬¥
She continued:
“Part of this rise is increased detection — patients are being evaluated and tested sooner and more often. But part of it is a real increase in the rates.”
As prescription costs continue to rise, the increase in diabetes becomes more and more problematic. The central issue here is the rise in obesity! Kids need to develop good habits at a young age, and parents need to facilitate that!!
