Got a question about healthy food? Margaux J. Rathbun, a certified nutritional therapy practitioner, can answer it for you!

This week, a curious vegetarian FitPerez reader reached out to Margaux about options for non-meat protein sources after a workout. Check out some AWESOME advice for easy and delicious protein fixes below!

Question:

Hi! I love your video blogs on Perez’s site. Quick question for you, what are some good high protein options to eat after a workout, I’m vegetarian, and I’ve heard that its better to eat real food rather than a protein shake.

Answer:

Great question! Even though I am not a vegetarian, I do get a lot of my protein from non-meat sources, especially after a workout. My favorite thing to do is make a high-protein smoothie using real food ingredients and not any powder. I just prefer to always get my nutrients from food before taking supplements. To make a great post-workout smoothie, all you need is:

1-2 Tbsp Coconut Oil (organic if possible, you can get this at Whole Foods or Trader Joes)
1-2 Tbsp Chia Seeds (watch my recent video to learn more about chia seeds)
1-2 handfuls of blueberries (bonus points if you pick them yourself)
1 C or so of Greek yogurt (you can add as much or as little as you like for desired consistency)
Banana (optional)

Just blend all these ingredients together in a blender and enjoy! You can also store the leftover smoothie in the fridge for the next day.

If you are not a fan of smoothies, you can get your protein from avocados, beans (soak them overnight to avoid gassy issues), nuts, lentils, and sesame seeds. I also like eating almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and Brazil nuts because they make an easy snack when you are on-the-go. Peas, beets, artichokes, and apples are some other good sources of protein.

Hope that helps!
