Scientists Have Reversed The Aging Process In Mice

Harvard Scientists have turned weak and feeble old mice into healthy animals. This is the first step in hopefully learning how to slow down the aging process in humans.

The Harvard scientists focused on a process called telomere shortening, which is linked to aging.

Cells in the body contain 23 chromosomes with a protective cap on the end called a telomere. Each time a cell divides the telomere is cut shorter. This process is behind much of the wear and tear associated with aging.

These scientists decided to breed genetically engineered mice that did not have the enzyme called telomerase that stops telomeres getting shorter. Without the enzyme, the mice aged prematurely.

However, the researchers gave the mice injections to reactivate the enzyme, it repaired the damaged tissues and reversed the signs of aging!!

This exact procedure would not work quite the same in humans since they stop producing telomerase at adulthood, while mice produce it throughout their lives. Raising levels of telomerase in people might slow the ageing process, but it makes the risk of cancer soar.

Well, there is clearly some more tinkering to be done…but at least it is a start!
