Looks like he won’t be having another after all…
I’ll Have Another has been scratched from Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, marking an end on the colt’s bid to become the first Triple Crown champ since 1978.
The horse’s trainer, Doug O’Neil, revealed that I’ll Have Another suffered from the beginning signs of tendonitis in his left front leg and the trainer and owner, J. Paul Reddam, decided to retire the horse for good.
O’Neil states the following about the decision process:
He looks great. He’s sound. He went great this morning. He looks super (but) you just can’t take a chance. He’s too valuable of a horse and we love him to death like all of them.
You wouldn’t run a horse if you think something might happen.
We’re super glad that these trainers had the horse’s long term health in mind and not just wanting a piece of history.
I’ll Have Another will need at least a year to fully recover but we hope it goes smoothly!
