Stephen Colbert is usually the funniest man in the room, and his show The Colbert Report has just gotten better and better!
But the star recently opened up about how it still hurts him to this day when he remembers how his father and brothers died in a tragic airplane crash that happened when he was just ten years old.
Here’s what he said during the interview:
├óΓé¼┼ôThings didn├óΓé¼Γäót seem that important anymore. Nothing seemed that important anymore. My mother said to me — and I think she said this to all my brothers and sisters — she urged me to look at everything in the light of eternity. In other words, it doesn├óΓé¼Γäót matter what I wear. I just wear the uniform of my youth. I wear an oxford-cloth shirt and khakis. What does it matter? What does it matter what I wear?”
Regarding whether his grief still affects him, almost four decades after the terrible event from his past, Colbert said:
“It├óΓé¼Γäós not as keen. Well, it├óΓé¼Γäós not as present, how about that? It├óΓé¼Γäós just as keen but not as present. But it will always accept the invitation. Grief will always accept the invitation to appear. It├óΓé¼Γäós got plenty of time for you. That├óΓé¼Γäós right. ‘I├óΓé¼Γäóll be here when you need me.’ The interesting thing about grief, I think, is that it is its own size. It is not the size of you. It is its own size. And grief comes to you. You know what I mean? I├óΓé¼Γäóve always liked that phrase He was visited by grief, because that├óΓé¼Γäós really what it is. Grief is its own thing. It├óΓé¼Γäós not like it├óΓé¼Γäós in me, and I├óΓé¼Γäóm going to deal with it. It├óΓé¼Γäós a thing, and you have to be okay with its presence. If you try to ignore it, it will be like a wolf at your door.├óΓé¼┬¥
That’s really sad, but we’re glad that Stephen has managed to be as successful as he is despite the tragedy that happened so early in his life.
We’re proud of ya Stephen!
