Not even a spoonful of sugar can make this Disney diss go down!
While presenting the Best Actress Award to Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks at the National Board of Review Awards Gala on Tuesday, Meryl Streep slammed the late man behind the mouse, Walt Disney.
The spectacled Oscar-winner gave a 10-minute long tribute to Emma that proved to be quite a spectacle by its own right, especially in how she blasted Uncle Walt:
“Some of his associates reported that Walt Disney didn├óΓé¼Γäót really like women. Ward Kimball, who was one of his chief animators, one of the original ‘Nine Old Men,’ creator the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and Jiminy Cricket, said of Disney: ├óΓé¼╦£He didn├óΓé¼Γäót trust women or cats.├óΓé¼Γäó And there is a piece of received wisdom that says that the most creative people are often odd, or irritating, eccentric, damaged, difficult….Disney, who brought joy, arguably, to billions of people, was perhaps, or had some├óΓé¼┬ªracist proclivities. He formed and supported an anti-Semitic industry lobby. And he was certainly, on the evidence of his company├óΓé¼Γäós policies, a gender bigot….When I saw the film [Saving Mr. Banks], I could just imagine Walt Disney├óΓé¼Γäós chagrin at having to cultivate P.L. Travers├óΓé¼Γäó favor for 20 years that it took to secure the rights to her work. It must have killed him to encounter, in a woman, an equally disdainful and superior creature, a person dismissive of his own, considerable gifts and prodigious output and imagination.”
Wow! We’ve never seen such shade thrown before, animated or otherwise!
Well, there goes Meryl’s chances of ever portraying Walt in a movie that we’d like to think would be called Disney Wears Prada, which would probably earn her every award ever!
Meanwhile, it’s your move, Disney! We’ll see how the Mouse responds to all this drama!
