Sayonara, Mr. CEO!
Brendan Eich, the co-founder of software company Mozilla (best known for their Firefox web browser) is stepping down as CEO after it was revealed he donated $1,000 in 2008 in support of Proposition 8, which aimed at banning gay marriage in California!
All week long, Eich has been steadfast in saying he would NOT resign from his post despite the public outcry. But yesterday, Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker announced the change on the company’s blog, posting:
“Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn├óΓé¼Γäót live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it├óΓé¼Γäós because we haven├óΓé¼Γäót stayed true to ourselves. Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO. He├óΓé¼Γäós made this decision for Mozilla and our community.├óΓé¼┬¥
Eich has refused to apologize for his actions from 6 years ago, suggesting that his personal beliefs do not effect his ability to lead at Mozilla. He said:
“So, I don’t want to talk about my personal beliefs because I kept them out of Mozilla all these 15 years we’ve been going. I don’t believe they’re relevant.”
Mitchell Baker and many staffers at Mozilla disagree though! Ms. Baker explained just why Eich had to go, saying:
“It├óΓé¼Γäós clear that Brendan cannot lead Mozilla in this setting. The ability to lead ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ particularly for the CEO ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ is fundamental to the role and that is not possible here.├óΓé¼┬¥
Additional pressure was put on Eich to quit after several Mozilla employees protested on Twitter! Take a look:

To me, @Mozilla is about openness & expression of freedom. I hope to see us have leadership that represents those values in their actions.

Dating site OKCupid also shut down their site to users on Firefox, giving them a message instead that told them to use another browser like Safari or Chrome!
And now, the search begins for a new CEO!
Baker stated that there is not currently a leading candidate for the job but that there are many talented individuals at Mozilla already who will be vetted for the position.
Question #1 should probably be how they feel about gay marriage, don’t you think??
