Fashion people love putting black paint on models’ faces.
Especially on white models’ faces.

And even when they don’t mean for it to look like blackface, it… totally looks like blackface.
Italian designer Claudio Cutugno is the latest fashion world denizen to engage in the very ill-advised practice.
The 22-year-old sent all of his models down the runway during his fall 2015 presentation on Tuesday with glittering black paint applied thickly to their faces.
According to Cutugno, the glitter paint was meant to symbolize insects swarming the models’ faces, and he was inspired by Italian artist Emilio Isgro, who often uses swarms of insects in his work.
This seems to happen particularly often in Europe, where the history of blackface used as a racist and mocking practice is not as well noted as it is in the United States.
HOWEVER! Considering that the use of blackface in European magazines is always called out, you’d think they had learned their lesson by now!
Although, to be fair, plenty of people in the US, who really should know better, continue to engage in blackface as well.
We’ll all just have to continue educating people and hope for the best.
