This is truly tragic.
A Germanwings Airbus A320 has reportedly crashed in the Alps in southern France, and according to French President Francois Hollande, there are “apparently no survivors.” On board were 144 passengers, two of whom were babies, and six crew members. The plane crashed in a remote part, and not many details are available at this time.
Lufthansa, who owns Germanwings, released a statement via Twitter, saying:

There are conflicting reports about whether or not a distress call was made, but what is clear is that the plane made a steep descent in a matter of eight minutes, 44 minutes after the flight began. The plane was 24 years old, and last had a major inspection in 2013, but had a routine technical check yesterday… and the captain had over 10 years of experience with over 6,000 flying hours.
Sadly, any attempt to get to the remote wreckage will be made more difficult because a storm system is heading into that region of the Alps within the next 12 hours, according to meteorologists.
This sucks. We wish stuff like this would stop happening.
