Yay, another awesome Penny Chic x CocoPerez DIY video!
Blogger Shauna Miller of Penny Chic and YouTube star Meghan Hughes demonstrate (above) how easy it to make your own hole-y t-shirt without spending $100+ on ones from IRO or Alexander Wang.

This tutorial also couldn’t have come at a more perfect time because Selena Gomez wears a ripped-up tee in her new video for Good For You, and Kylie Jenner was JUST pictured in one herself while out to lunch with Tyga.
It’s all the rage! Clearly!
All you need is an old white t-shirt, a hardcover book, and some sandpaper!
If you’re pressed for time, check out our step-by-step GIF tutorial (below)!

Step 1: Get your old white tee and sandpaper ready. You can buy coarse sandpaper at any hardware store for less than a dollar! Yay, sandpaper!

Step 2: Lay your t-shirt down on a flat surface. To prevent holes from going through to the back of the shirt, place a hardcover book, like Shauna’s own Penny Chic: How to Be Stylish on a Real Girl’s Budget (!), inside the shirt.

Step 3: Fold your sandpaper and go to town on the tee! Use the folded edge to brush against the fabric in small movements to pierce it. You don’t have to follow a specific pattern, because, as Shauna says, the idea is to suggest that the shirt was worn and washed one too many times, and the holes occurred naturally.

Step 4: Choose a spot near the bottom or side of the shirt where you can make one extra big “statement” hole — you might want to avoid the bust area unless you’re going for a Mean Girls/Regina George look! Ha!
TIP: Once you’re happy with all the perforations you’ve made, toss the shirt into the washer to really fray all the edges. You can also simply throw it in the dryer and skip the wash.

Step 5: The final product is fun to style with a dark skinny jean to contrast with the loose, billowy tee. Black strappy sandals and a faux leather moto jacket will give the distressed shirt some polish and keep it from being too sloppy.

Final step: Dance like Meghan! You’re a rockstar!
