With so many legends lost this year, it’s a bit hard for some to keep track of the latest celebrity deaths — even for fellow celebrities.
After George Michael suddenly died in his sleep on Christmas Day, Sarah Michelle Gellar committed a commemoratory faux pas when she accidentally mourned Boy George instead!

In a now deleted post on Twitter, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star shared:

After a swarm of Internet users instantly corrected her, SMG was immediately apologetic for her mistake, but insisted that her intentions behind the slip up weren’t at all cruel.
In a series of follow up tweets, the actress said she had just misheard the upsetting news — and regardless of who passed, it’s all extremely sad.
She continued:
Just as sad when you get the correct information- #ripGeorgeMichael thank you to everyone who corrected me- it’s still so sad

And for the record yes I completely know the difference between Boy George and George Michael- I heard incorrectly. My intentions were good

This is usually why I don’t comment on public matters, but it all seemed so sad on Christmas. Lesson learned.

As for Boy George, the music icon joined the long list of celebs who paid tribute to the former Wham frontman on Twitter, saying:
“Devastating. What a beautiful voice he had and his music will live on as a testament to his talent. I can’t believe he is gone. I hope the Buddha will hold him in his arms.”
The Culture Club singer also noted that while the two performers used to be competition, they opened up to each other in the recent years:
I’m sure George’s closest friends would not consider me a ‘friend. It’s true, George and I never got close. He was my competition, my peer. https://t.co/nxzVLNRIlV

It was only in recent years that we actually spoke. I hoped he would rise up and become strong again and fill our lives with more music. https://t.co/nxzVLNRIlV
