Charlie Murphy was such a standout presence on Chappelle’s Show, on which he told legendary stories of playing basketball with Prince and fighting with Rick James, we’ve been wondering how Dave Chappelle would honor his late friend and costar.
We… did not expect it to be at a John Mayer concert.

But the comic and the singer have been friends for years, so Dave surprised John’s audience in Ohio Wednesday night when he took the stage to share the sad news with the audience:
“Today I got some terrible news. My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning. Everyone in comedy is heartbroken.”
Dave and John talked Prince, Rick James, and partying before breaking it down with a performance of You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me dedicated to their fallen friend.
