What is going on in Oakland!?
Months after the world collectively rolled its eyes at “BBQ Becky,” the Oakland woman who called the police on two black men for grilling without a permit, another Oakland woman (above) has gone viral for causing permit pandemonium.
A video circulated online over the weekend showing the angry woman, rightfully dubbed “Permit Patty” by the internet, allegedly calling the police because an 8-year-old girl was selling water on a sidewalk.

A lot went down in the few days since the video was uploaded. But mostly, it involved Twitter tracking down the angry woman, real name apparently Alison Ettel, and gleefully watching her career suffer.
It all started on Saturday, when Twitter user @_ethiopiangold shared the video of Ettel seemingly calling police on her younger cousin, who was selling water bottles to save up money for a trip to Disneyland.
The video shows Ettel trying to duck to avoid being recorded before explaining that the girl was “illegally selling water without a permit.” Watch for yourself (below):

Was it illegal, though? Ettel herself may not have actually thought so, as she later admitted in an interview with HuffPost that she only pretended to call the police — adding that it was the noise from the child that drove her to fake dial.
She explained:
“They were screaming about what they were selling. It was literally nonstop. It was every two seconds, ‘Come and buy my water.’ It was continuous and it wasn’t a soft voice, it was screaming.”
Now, Ettel’s screaming at herself for making the pretend call. She told HuffPost she completely regrets making the “stress-related” confrontation, and begged the publication not to make her sound “horrible.”
But the internet already decided otherwise:

In the meantime, Twitectives discovered that Ettel owns a business called TreatWell that makes cannabis products for humans and animals alike — which might not be entirely legal, according to SF Gate.
Many local dispensaries have decided to cut ties with TreatWell since the incident went viral, according to screenshots from a Twitter user who reached out to the businesses:

That’s not all! Ettel was also set to be one of the subjects of a documentary called Lady Buds, which centered around women in the cannabis industry. But after seeing Permit Patty at her worst, the director of the film decided to cut her out of the project and remove “all content that remotely promotes her or her business.”

On top of all that, the mother of the young girl will apparently be pressing charges for harassment.
We think Permit Patty learned her lesson here: don’t try to mobilize the police against people of color just because one is personally annoyed they’re being too loud.
