Ariana Grande appeared on The Tonight Show Thursday night to celebrate the release of her new album Sweetener — but she kicked things off by celebrating the life of Aretha Franklin.
The pint-sized singer opened the episode by singing a rendition of Aretha’s hit Natural Woman backed by The Roots.
It was a very appropriately timed tribue, as the Queen of Soul had passed away earlier that day after losing her battle to pancreatic cancer.

After wowing the audience with her performance, Ari told Jimmy Fallon she was lucky enough to meet Aretha during a performance at the White House, and described the late diva as “so sweet.”
The singer also talked about getting Madonna to play God in her God Is A Woman music video, and shared some new insight into her whirlwind romance with Pete Davidson. (Yes, she knew she was going to marry him when they first met!)
