Michael Jackson's 'Leaving Neverland' Sexual Abuse Accusers Likely To Get New Trials Against Singer's Estate

The two men who were the subject of the world-turning Leaving Neverland documentary may be set to get yet another day in court against the estate of the world’s most famous pop star.

As you’ll no doubt recall, Wade Robson and James Safechuck sued superstar Michael Jackson‘s estate several years ago, claiming past sexual abuse by the singer back when the two men were young boys. The lawsuits were first dismissed in 2017, in part due to the statute of limitations — but now, thanks to a California appeals judge, the men may yet get their day in court once again.

According to TMZ, a tentative ruling that would overturn the dismissal of both their cases against the estate has been issued. This comes from a new CA law which just extended the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse cases, and it may mean both Robson and Safechuck can have their allegations heard by a jury. Talk about the potential trial of the century…

Now, nothing is a done deal yet, and the keyword with the Appeals Court’s ruling so far is “tentative.” Oral arguments from both sides are set to begin this week, and the justices that preside over the Appeals Court could change their minds and keep both cases dismissed — for good.

However, as the outlet notes, the ruling in cases like this has “typically” stood in the past, so perhaps there’s at least a good chance it’ll stick here, too, and both men will receive new trials.

But what about ‘Leaving Neverland’?

The potential for a jury trial here is interesting, to say the least; Jackson’s estate is reportedly ready to bring forth “a number of objections [in this appeal], which will be addressed by the trial judge,” not the least of which is whether there’s even the possibility of putting together an unbiased jury pool that could potentially sit for a new trial.

The pop singer’s family has been unabashed in their criticism of the wildly popular Leaving Neverland exposé, calling the doc “an unfair public lynching” and arguing that it’s done nothing but tarnish the late star’s legacy worldwide. Knowing that, the singer’s team must be concerned that potentially any number of jurors on a prospective trial pool could be biased against the pop star from the very start. So it goes with high-profile, public lawsuits and cases like the ones here.
