4 Alcohol Myths That Encourage Drunk Driving

alcohol myths

By now, we’re all aware of Ryan Dunn‘s tragic death that occurred while he was driving legally intoxicated, but we’re not all aware of the truth behind alcohol myths that encourage people to drink and drive.

Often times, drunk drivers may not even know they’re drunk because of misguided information, so please do yourself a favor and get the facts straight! Check out the truth behind four alcohol myths below!

1. A drink with diet soda will NOT keep you any more sober than any other alcoholic beverage.

In fact, experts say mixing caffeine with alcohol is slightly more dangerous because the extra energy from the caffeine encourages you to drink MORE than you should.

2. Having a high tolerance DOES NOT mean you can drink more before your BAC increases, you simply need to drink more to feel “drunk”.

According to an expert:

“There are people whose bodies process alcohol differently and who appear to have a high tolerance, but that puts them at a higher risk of dangerous decision-making, because their bodies aren├óΓé¼Γäót giving them the cues that they├óΓé¼Γäóve had too much to drink.”

3. One drink an hour doesn’t always mean you’re safe to drive!

On average, it takes men’s bodies an hour to metabolize one drink, but women should wait at least an hour and a half per drink due to unique physiology.

4. Vodka gets you drunk just as fast as any other liquor. Period.

We’ve honestly never heard of this one, but apparently there are people out there who think drinking vodka will help them avoid a DUI charge.

However, darker liquor may make you feel sicker the next day because they contain impurities called congeners, which are byproducts of fermentation. They bottleneck in the body while enzymes in the stomach and liver try to convert them to water and lead to intense hangovers.

Well, no more rum and cokes for us! Ha!

We just learned something new and we hope you did too! Remember, buzzed driving is DRUNK DRIVING!
