Alex Murdaugh’s double murder conviction has been… OVERTURNED.
In 2021, the prominent South Carolina attorney shocked the nation when, on the brink of facing financial crimes for stealing millions from clients, he allegedly murdered his wife Maggie and youngest son Paul. Prosecutors argued Alex’s motive was to use the murder of his wife and son as an opportunity to distract from his financial crimes, as he would play up the victim angle… However, it was later ruled that HE was the killer.
In 2023, Alex was found guilty of two counts of murder and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison. Later in 2023, he was hit with an additional 40 years for federal financial crimes, and 27 for state financial crimes. And since then, he’s been behind bars at the McCormick Correctional Institution in South Carolina. However, things just switched up in an INSANE way!

On Wednesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court officially overturned Alex’s conviction, claiming former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill, who handled the 2023 double-murder trial, swayed the jury. As you may recall, Alex’s attorneys Richard Harpootlian and Jim Griffin claimed in a 2023 appeal that Rebecca “advised” the jury on a guilty verdict:
“[She] tampered with the jury by advising them not to believe Murdaugh’s testimony and other evidence presented by the defense, pressuring them to reach a quick guilty verdict, and even misrepresenting critical and material information to the trial judge in her campaign to remove a juror she believed to be favorable to the defense.”
And that’s exactly what the South Carolina Supreme Court has concluded! In a statement, they wrote:
“Our justice system provides — indeed demands — that every person is entitled to a fair trial, which includes an impartial jury untainted by external forces bent on influencing the jury toward a biased verdict.”
WHOA! The Supreme Court went on to reveal they have “no choice” but to grant Alex a new trial:
“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial.”
What a development!!!
Regardless of this news, Murdaugh will remain behind bars due to his financial crimes. But still, this is huge for him — and SO shocking!
